amazon web services - hosted zone record which is routed to an EC2 IPV4 address not working AWS

Question

I created a domain (example.com) and I tried to make a record (thing.example.com) that connects it to my ec2 IP address (1.1.1.1 for example). For what I am routing the traffic to I chose "IP Address or another value, depending on type." For record type I chose "A". I made TTL = 0 seconds, but I've waited 30 minutes and it isn't working.
