So I've made myself a simple git server using a raspberry Pi and a portable USB drive and it has been working well for some time. However, after a couple weeks of not having used it, I’m suddenly finding major problems.
Local system:
Server:
- Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
I’m using SSH to access the server (which is headless). It is setup up very similar to the one here: https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-git-server/
Note: I’m not actually certain that the following symptoms are part of the same issue but suspect they are.
Issue Pt 1: Push, Pull and Clone Just Hang
The first thing I noticed was that pushing to my repo just hangs. Trying pull and clone had the same issue, as did cloning from a new, empty repo.
When I say “hang” here I mean that:
- At the terminal the command outputs “Cloning into ‘XYZ’…” or push/pull message and then sits with the little [] prompt. I’ve waited 30 minutes + and nothing happens.
- (When cloning) If I check the local file system at this time it has created the directory to clone into along with the .git directory, but none of the actual repo contents are copied.
- Eventually I've just used Ctrl-C to quit and return to the regular prompt. When cloning, this clears the directory it had made.
I’m just cloning like so:
git clone [email protected]:/media/usb/REPONAME.git LOCAL_DIRECTORY
Where “pi” is what I’m calling my server, its IP is as you see, and /media/usb is where my portable drive is mounted.
Issue Pt 2: Some Commands Now Request Password
I was pretty convinced at first that I’d just mucked up the remote/upstream something or other, so among other things I tried these commands on my existing local repo (the one I was stuck on to start with, which FYI has a couple of commits I still need to push). “pi” is the name of my remote here.
git push --set-upstream pi master
or
git fetch pi
Either or these will prompt me for a password like so:
[email protected]'s password:
But to my recollection I’ve configured no passwords for access to this git server nor do I particularly want them. And none of my go-to passwords (bad habit, yes) work.
Attempts to Resolve
- I’m able to SSH into the server just fine (no connectivity issues) and verified the external storage is still mounted and the files appear intact.
- I’ve run fsck on the USB drive with no problems reported.
- I’ve run git fsck --full on both server and local systems with no problems reported.
- I’ve rebooted both machines because.
- I’ve tried clearing and re-defining my remotes on the local system — maybe I mucked the config at some point? — but have the same results.
- I’ve tried initing a new repo on the server (worked fine) and cloning from that but with the same result.
Alas I’m pretty bad at git and Linux in general, but I have spent some hours Googling the issue to no avail.
