php - How to add webp support to Slider Revolution 6 that will survive plugin updates?

Question

This thread Adding Webp support to Revolution Slider shows how to edit the Slider Revolution plugin directly to add support for webp. But this will likely get overwritten or broken by updates to the plugin.

Is there a way to do the same via a child theme's functions file with hooks and filters to achieve the same result? This may still break after the plugin gets updated but at least it wouldn't get overwritten.
