json deserialization - Jackson - Custom matrix deserializer

Question

I'm invoking a 3rd party service that return certain fields as either Arrays or Array of Arrays. In the second case there is usually a single row anyway so it can be considered as a simple array.

This however breaks the Jackson mapping. For now I have resolved by mapping the fields to List rather than List and then extracting the actual type later.

I would like to write a custom deserializer so that I can map those fields to List. My idea is to read the Array and return it as it is or return the first element in case it's a matrix. I cannot seem to find a deserializer implementation for reading a List though.
