java - Why does this method always return 0 for first return

The method is called 4 times, if a non int or character is input first its rejected and even though you input a correct int the next time it always returns 0. I'm basically trying to get the method to call itself everytime a wrong input is entered.

public static int numCheck(Scanner scan, int num) {

        try {

            num = scan.nextInt();// get input from user

            if (num >= 1 && num <= 9) {

                System.out.println("Valid input");

            } else {
                System.out.print("Not valid input try again");

                numCheck(scan, num);

            }

        }

        catch (InputMismatchException e) {

            System.out.print("Invalid entry, number must be an integer.
");
            scan.nextLine();
            numCheck(scan, num);

        }

    return num;
}
