Is RAM still used during memory mapping to hard drive?

Question

I'm memory mapping to a file on hard disk and performing I/O operations. I wanna know how that process actually works? Is a page (4KiB) on hard disk copied into RAM and the changes are done there, then copied back to hard disk?
