What is the right way to add wildcard domain to a letsencrypt certificate on Ubuntu 18.04 despite error "client...does not support any combination..."

I have a site working well using a letsencrypt cert for

mysite.com

having

mysite.com www.mysite.com

I wish to replace the contents with

*.mysite.com

Attempting:

sudo certbot --cert-name mysite.com -d *.mysite.com

resulted in

Client with the currently selected authenticator does not support any combination of challenges that will satisfy the CA

Have tried this and this and then retried above command but got same error. Then modified it to:

sudo certbot --authenticator standalone --installer nginx -d mysite.com -d *.mysite.com --pre-hook "systemctl stop nginx" --post-hook "systemctl start nginx"

Gave same error above: "client with..."

Any guidance would be appreciated.
