php - Is there a way to live update a part of a page without making an ajax call every few seconds

My problem is that making an ajax call every few seconds to live update part of my page starts to slow it down significantly after some time. I'm hoping that there is a way to update the page only when a specific piece of data is added to the MySQL table without there being a need to query for any changes in the table every few seconds.

I hope that my question makes some kind of sense. Any help is much appreciated.
