gimp - Crop image and export without white space or grey/black grid

Question

I cropped a photo in GIMP, hit enter and attempted to export image as png, jpg, with current layer only unclicked and clicked. Used crop and zealous crop. Pretty much the same result, either white borders or the grey/black grid border. I've followed and read many post on this and can't seem to find a solution. I assume I'm doing something wrong.
