android - Underline markup adding spaces on certain devices

Question

I have a string that gets underline applied in xml

  <string name="unite_for_good"><u>Unite
For
Good</u>

But on when the app runs on

Huawei P20 lite / Android v.9;

or

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite / Android v.10

The markup characters appear as spaces at runtime

Is there any way around this without making the text a hard coded image?
