How decode json with backslash in PHP

Question

I want to be able to decode in php json like this {"a":"<3"}, but always return null:

    echo "1:".json_encode(json_decode ('{"a":"<3"}')).PHP_EOL;
    echo "2:".json_encode(json_decode ('{"a":"<\3"}')).PHP_EOL;
    echo "3:".json_encode(json_decode ("{"a":"<\3"}")).PHP_EOL;

what I have to do to decode that json?
