heroku - How do I find out what caused my app to stop running?

Question

My free app on heroku stopped functioning. The 'worker' was switched to on in heroku. I restarted the app (turned it off and on) and that fixed it.

How do I debug/find out what cause my app to stop functioning? I guess it could in theory have been something inside my app code that broke, but it's been running for over 6 months with no issue. Is it unlikely that it's an issue on heroku's end?
