Using Quantum fourier transform(QFT) to do quantum counting

hey guys im reading a paper on quantum counting and in the paper it is said that: "There are different ways to do quantum counting. The first method is by using quantum Fourier transform (QFT) to find the period ?? as k sub j evolves, to find ??. where k sub js are the solutions we are looking to count. The number of iterations executed is encoded as part of the state. Can someone explain how qft can be used for this?
