android - Why dollar sign is used in activity name in manifest file?

Question

I have seen an activity, which is declared two times in manifest. One times just declaring with its name only. Second time with an inner classs using dollar sign $ like MyActivity$NestedClass. But the nested class is empty. I am a newbie. I did not understand why this empty nested class and why dollar sign is used here? I searched but did not understand.
