javascript - Metaballs-js Syntax Error "Cannot use import statement outside a module"

I try to use metaballs-js following these instructions:https://github.com/MrToph/metaballs-js/tree/master/packages/metaballs-js

I did npm install --save metaballs-js

My HTML code looks like this:

  <div class="wrapper">
    <canvas id="canvasId"></canvas>
  </div>
  <script src="js/jquery-2.2.4.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
  <script src="js/script.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

</body>

and I just copied the Javascript code from the instructions:

import initMetaballs from "metaballs-js";
const options = {
  numMetaballs: 100,
  minRadius: 3,
  maxRadius: 7.5,
  speed: 10.0,
  color: '#ff0024',
  backgroundColor: '#121212',
  useDevicePixelRatio: true
}

const cssSelector = '#canvasId'
initMetaballs(cssSelector, options)

This produces the following error: Uncaught SyntaxError: Cannot use import statement outside a module

Does anyone know what I am missing? Any help is appreciated!
