You need to change the encoding to utf8mb4 to be able to handle special characters.

Assuming you're using php mysqli, you need change the charset on client side:

connection = new mysqli(host, username, password, database, port);
connection->set_charset("utf8mb4");

Now make sure the mysql are also using utf8mb4:

ALTER DATABASE database_name CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;

The tables too:

ALTER TABLE table_name CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;

To confirm that the charsets are set:

USE database_name;
show variables like "character_set_database";
