raspberry pi - How to disable desktop but still be able to run custom code with GUI on the raspi?

Here's what I'm trying to do. I would like to make a GUI application on the Raspi while being able to boot up into the CLI. The problem is that I get the error: (g:606): Gtk-WARNING **: 19:08:04.203: cannot open display If I run any kind of GUI element from a code. Obviously that's because I disabled the desktop but then I've seen people who are able to activate GUI from a CLI. Or may I be missing something here? Anyways, my point is that I want to be able to activate custom code that is associated with GUI from the CLI. Any help would be helpful. Thanks.
