apache2.4 - password encryption formats in Apache for AuthLDAPBindPassword

Question

we are trying to use encrypted password in apache configuration for AuthLDAPBindPassword. Apache documentation - Password Formats says, apache understands the MD5 hashed passwords, but it is not working. it works fine if we use clear text password but failing with error message AH01631: user <username> : authorization failure for "/". did it work for any one? what am i missing? i dont see any requirement for modules in the documentation. Any help is appreciated! thank you!
