reactjs - Programatically select the first item in KendoReact MultiSelect

Question

I am trying to do something that seems simple, but can't for the life of me find any clear cut way to do it:

Simply select the first -- and only -- item in a KendoReact MultiSelect component. The existing single item has been filtered from a small data set and everything works as expected, I just am not sure how to programmatically select it.

Also, I don't want to use jQuery.
